Samantha Valentine, Health Visitor

"Owens taught me to never give up, whilst I felt (at the time time) I'd given up, I really hadn't!"

Current Job Title / Employer

Health Visitor-National Health Service

Dame Alice Owen's Class of...?

Should have been class of 2009 but I left in 2008.

Brief description of your path after Owen’s.

So I didn’t follow the ‘normal’ path. I failed my AS levels, and whilst Owens wanted me to continue, it just wasn’t the right thing and actually if I’d have stayed, I don’t think I’d be where I am now! I left Owens and went to college and did a BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care. I completed this in 2 years and came out with three distinctions (equivalent of 3 A’s at A Level - so it was definitely the right choice to leave!). I then went to Manchester University and went to the number 1 nursing school in 2010 to study Adult Nursing. I went on to to do an 18 month Midwifery conversion at Brighton University and then worked as a midwife for 5 years before returning to Uni back in Manchester to complete my Health Visitor Training. I have been working as a Health Visitor since 2018.

Did your time at Owen’s inspire any particular skills or attributes?

Owens taught me to never give up, whilst I felt (at the time time) I’d given up, I really hadn’t!

Favourite Owen’s memory?

Hanging around the PE department and Mr Breeze letting us ride on his quad bike!
